William Wymark Jacobs was a popular British writer of short humorous stories, often with surprise endings. Many were set on the London docks and the tramp steamers with which he was familiar. Today Jacobs is best known for his horror tales, especially his classic 1902 story The Monkey’s Paw, which has been filmed, televised, adapted for the stage, and included in numerous anthologies.
