Dutch artist Joost Swarte is one of the leading practioners of the "clear line" style of European cartoonists begun by Hergé and Edgar P. Jacobs. He founded the magazine Modern Papier in 1971 before joining Dutch underground comix artists Evert Geradts, Peter Pontiac and Mark Smeets on Tante Leny Presenteert. He has since expanded beyond the comics, illustrating magazine covers, record jackets and commercial designs. He is also a successful architect, furniture designer and stained-glass artist. Swarte was exposed in the U.S. through his work for Raw magazine and is now probably best-known as a poster designer. The three illustrations in Rosebud 18, The Memory (cover), Culture and Technique, and The Mirror were produced as limited-edition lithographic prints.
