Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1814. He was educated as a lawyer, but never practiced, instead opting for a career in journalism. He owned and edited several newspapers and magazines, but after the death of his wife in 1858 he became a recluse and devoted himself to the writing of supernatural horror tales. His Carmilla was published in 1872, twenty-five years before Bram Stoker’s Dracula, on which he had an obvious influence. Carmilla has been filmed many times, under titles including Blood and Roses, Tomb of the Vampire, The Vampire Lovers, Lust for a Vampire and The Blood-Spattered Bride.
