HANS JANOWITZ

German author Hans Janowitz and Austrian screenwriter Carl Mayer, both famous for their later work with director F.W. Murnau, first joined forces in 1920, on the screenplay for the great silent film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, directed by Robert Wiene. They based their story for the then-new medium of film on their experiences of the first World War and their joint visit to a post-war fair and sideshow. The film today is most noted for its pioneering Expressionist style, and has inspired numerous remakes and adaptations to this day.
