Howard R. Garis was a reporter for the Newark Evening News and a prolific author of children’s books, best known for his Uncle Wiggly series about a gentlemanly rheumatic rabbit, which spawned the board game still produced today. He also wrote a vast number of books under various pseudonyms for the Stratemeyer Syndicate from 1910 to 1933. These included The Bobbsey Twins (as Laura Lee Hope), The Great Marvel (as Roy Rockwood), Baseball Joe (as Lester Chadwick) and the first 36 volumes of Tom Swift under the name Victor Appleton.
