John Smelcer is a tribally and federally enrolled member of Ahtna, a tribe in Alaska. Among the last speakers of his severely endangered Native language, he compiled and edited the Ahtna Noun Dictonary and Pronunciation Guide, for which Noam Chomsky provided a foreword. He has published numerous bilingual poetry books, most recently Beautiful Words: The Complete Ahtna Poems (2011) and The Indian Prophet (2012). He is the author of over forty books, and is poetry editor of Rosebud magazine. John enjoyed working with co-editors Joseph Bruchac and Tom Pomplun to select the literature represented in Native American Classics. His website is www.johnsmelcer.com.
