Simon Pokagon (1830–1899) was a member of the Potawatomi tribe, and studied at Notre Dame University and Oberlin College, mastering five languages. He was the author of several books and multiple shorter works and was a featured speaker at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. His poem, The Red Man’s Rebuke, is from the preface for an 1893 publication of the same name. His poem appears in Native American Classics: Graphic Classics Volume 22.
