A Chickasaw, James Harris Guy was born and raised at Boggy Depot, Oklahoma, in the Choctaw Nation. In his time, he was considered the leading poet of the Chickasaw Nation, though few of his writings survive today. Jim Guy served as a Deputy U.S. Marshall in the Indian territory of Oklahoma, and as a member of the police force of the Chickasaw Nation. He was killed in a shootout with the outlaw Lee Gang in 1885. His poem appears in Native American Classics: Graphic Classics Volume 22.
