Elias Johnson (1837–1913), born on the Tuscarora Reservation in New York, was a chief of the Tuscarora Indians. His Native names were Tawennaki (Two Things of Equal Value) and Yutana Nire (A Lone Pine Tree). Johnson is the author of Legends, Traditions and Laws of the Iroquois, or Six Nations, and History of the Tuscarora Indians (1881), from which The Hunter and Medicine Legend is excerpted. His story appears in Native American Classics: Graphic Classics Volume 22.
